about

How this song came about is a pretty sweet story.

There was a cafe in Inverness,California--West Marin County, so, right on the edge of Tamales Bay--called the Blackbird. It was the first time we had played there, a Friday night, and we had a surprisingly full and enthusiastic house of West Mariners. One of the most enthusiastic was a guy named Robbie Long, who ended up buying a copy of our recording, "A Night at the Classic Cafe," which had this instrumental I wrote, called "Valley of the Moon."

That weekend, Robbie (who is an artist and a songwriter with a particular fondness for writing songs about dogs), wrote the lyrics, and recorded them over the "Valley of the Moon" instrumental, and then emailed me what he'd created on Monday. I loved it. I really really loved the lyrics. I felt Robbie totally caught what Beaucoup Chapeaux is all about. With a little tweaking of the original melody, we came up with this version, with Robbie's brilliant lyrics. We play this song just about every time we play. Thanks Robbie!

lyrics

We all sat 'round the table
We all drank the wine
We all told our stories
Of the past and future times

We all let our hair down
The corks fell to the floor
We laughed and passed the bottle
And filled our glass once more

In the Valley of the moon
Valley of the moon
The stars shine so bright tonight
In the Valley of the Moon

We are but flickers in the ember sky
Sparks still daring to fly
We join with the dust
We join with the wind
Like confetti in the parade of time

Step, step light
And here we go
Step, step light
And on with the show
Step, step light
To the valley above
Step, step light
To the valley below

We all sat 'round the table
We all drank the wine
We all told our stories
Of the past and future times

In the Valley of the moon
Valley of the moon
The stars shine so bright tonight
In the Valley of the Moon
